Quartz Crystal

Quartz is a slightly birefringent crystal, which make Quartz an important material for making optical waveplate. Large size, high quality optical grade Quartz is synthesized in an autoclave via the hydrothermal process. Quartz crystal is relatively abundant in nature, however high quality optical grade quartz are mostly synthetic. Single synthetic crystal quartz is grown by hydrothermal method in autoclaves. The autoclave works on the principle of hydrothermal gradients with temperatures in 350 - 450 °C and pressures exceeding 1,000 atmospheres.

In electronics, quartz crystals are used for accurate timing and frequency control, such as cell phone, satellite communications, radio transmitters, gas pumps meter, etc.

Quartz Application:

- Piezoelectric Component
- VUV Filter
- FIR Window
- Prism
- Rotator
- Waveplate

Note: Quartz should not be processed or used at temperatures greater than 490 °C. At temperatures >490°C, Crystal Quartz starts to revert to glassy state, a process which is complete by 530°C. At this time, as annealling is unlikely, fracture of component is probable.

It should be specially emphasized that peculiarities together with excellent DUV transmission make crystal quartz the unique material for production of optical components for various instruments, equipment and complex integrated systems operating in UV spectral range. Quartz crystal's good optical transmission over 100 μm wavelengths allows it to be effectively utilized as THz diapason as well.
