Optical Crystals

Birefringent Crystals

- YVO4 Undoped Yttrium Orthovanadate, has large birefringence and better physical and mechnical properties than other birefringent crystals. YVO4 is well suited for compact fiber optical components, such as polaizing beam displacer, isolators, circulators, interleaver etc.

- Rutile TiO2, Rutile has the highest refractive indices at visible wavelengths of any known crystal, and also exhibits a particularly large birefringence and high dispersion. It is useful for the manufacture of certain optical elements, especially polarization optics, for longer visible and infrared wavelengths up to about 4.5µm.

- Calcite also called Iceland Spar, is often mined naturally that has high birefringence, wide spectral transmission and availability in reasonably sized rhombs. Calcite is a negative uniaxial crystal and mostly used as visible and near IR polarizers.

- Alfa-BBO features with high optical homogeneity (better than 1x10-6/cm), extremely low absorption in the UV to IR range , low hygroscopic susceptibility, high damage threshold, Alfa-BBO is particularly suitable for making high power UV polarizer. Glan-Thompson Polarizer make of alfa-BBO crystal has continuous transmission from 200-3300nm. Polarizer made of alfa-BBO crystal has higher performance than traditional Calcite polarizer.

- Quartz is widely used for making optical components such as waveplates, polarizers. In electronics, quartz are used for accurate timing (oscillator) and frequency control such as meters in gas pump, cell phones and satellite communications.
