OptoCity make lower thickness multi-order waveplates. This low-order waveplate has lower temperature sensitivity, larger bandwidth and larger field angle than other multi-order waveplate.
Low-order waveplates are widely used for high and low power laser applications. λ/2 waveplates rotate the direction of polarization and λ/4 waveplate convert linear into circular polarization or vice versa.
The net effect of multi-order waveplate at the design wavelength is basically the same as zero-order waveplate. However, the optical bandwidth is limited. Also, the retardance has a higher temperature sensitivity. Low-order waveplates are relatively small order multiple-order waveplates, which keep the mentioned detrimental effects low. Low-order waveplate has relatively lower cost than zero-order plate.
